  • All of us, no matter how faithful or dedicated, suffer times of wrenching physical, emotional, or spiritual pain. With the psalmist we sometimes cry to God “out of the depths” of our suffering. But Jesus reminds us that we are “possessed,” not by the evil that assaults us, but by the Spirit Who lives in us, leads us, renews us, and strengthens us by the Word. We are not promised “heaven on earth,” but we are promised eternal life with Jesus—free from the wants and fears and pains and suffering of this world. We cry “out of the depths” and look forward to our rejoicing in the perfect “heights” of God’s gift in Jesus, a wondrous vision we are privileged to share with others who find themselves in the depths.
